The Calgary Flames caught a break on Friday afternoon when they learned that the Penguins Sidney Crosby would not play on Friday night when the two teams meet in Pittsburgh. The team said that Crosby will miss two games as a precautionary measure because he has not been feeling well. The Penguins said in a statement that there is no indication that Crosby has the mumps, an illness that has been circulating around the league recently. Crosby had a swollen right cheek when he spoke to media earlier on Friday. Crosbys absence will be felt for a Penguins squad that is already having trouble scoring of late. Pittsburgh (18-6-3) has seen its own scoring decline over a 3-2-1 stretch, netting just 12 goals in that span after Mondays 4-3 overtime loss at the New York Rangers. Some of it has to do with a cold power play that has one goal in 14 chances in the last six games after converting 33.3 percent over the first 21. Calgary (17-11-2) could extend those difficulties if it can sustain a penalty kill thats thwarted 11 of 12 chances over eight games. Pittsburgh has been strong as well with successful kills on 14 of 15, but its allowed all those chances over the last four games. Steve Downie had a goal and an assist against the Rangers after going eight games without a point. Evgeni Malkin remained hot with his fourth goal in as many games. The Penguins, who rank third in the league with 3.18 goals per game, have limited the Flames to 11 on their current series run, but the Flames are averaging 3.00 this season after ranking 18th (2.6 over the previous seven. Its resulted in plenty more success in the standings, though theyve now dropped three straight for the first time this season after Thursdays 4-3 defeat in Buffalo. Mark Giordano, who scored to extend his point streak to six games and leads all NHL defenseman with 30, said theres no panic mounting with the skid. Weve got to cut it off now, though, Giordano said. Weve got to find a way to get points next game, get the win, and move on from there. Calgary, making its third stop on a four-game trip, went with Karri Ramo in goal against the Sabres, so Jonas Hiller could face the Penguins. Hiller has lost his last three starts and has a 3.30 goals-against average over a 2-5-0 span. Marc-Andre Fleury has been a big part of Pittsburghs success against Calgary, winning his last five starts with a 1.60 GAA. Fleury is 2-0-1 with a 1.96 GAA to begin the month despite allowing four goals against the Rangers. The Penguins are expecting to have defencemen Kris Letang (groin) and forward Patric Hornqvist (undisclosed) back. Letang has missed five games and Hornqvist has been out two. Head coach Mike Johnston said via Penguins Twitter that he expects to have both of them back tonight.
